5 Exam Techniques That Lift a WACE Biology Score From a C to an A

Most students who plateau in WACE Biology are not missing content. They know the Krebs cycle, they can define homeostasis, and they can recite the stages of mitosis in order. What is actually costing them marks is exam technique: how they read a question, how they structure a response, and how they use the mark allocation to decide how much to write.

Here are five habits that consistently separate a C grade from an A grade in the exam room.

1. Read the command word before you read the question

"Describe", "explain" and "evaluate" are not interchangeable, and WACE markers apply this distinction strictly. A "describe" answer states what happens. An "explain" answer must also say why it happens, usually by linking cause and effect. An "evaluate" answer needs a judgement, weighing evidence on more than one side. Students who answer an "explain" question with a "describe" response typically lose half the marks on offer, even when every fact they wrote is correct.

2. Match your answer length to the mark allocation

A 2-mark question wants two distinct, clearly stated points, not a paragraph. A 6-mark question needs a developed answer with several linked ideas, and usually rewards structure, such as separate sentences for each stage of a process. Students lose time, and sometimes marks for vague or repetitive writing, when they write a 6-mark answer's worth of text for a 2-mark question, and equally lose marks when they under-answer a high-value question because they assumed it was quick.

3. Label diagrams and graphs with precision

Diagram and graph questions are where technically strong students often lose marks unnecessarily, usually for two different reasons. The first is reading a diagram or graph that is already given: label lines need to touch the exact structure they are pointing to, axes need units, and any trend described in words has to match what the graph actually shows, not what the student expected it to show. The second is drawing a diagram from scratch when asked to: a clean, correctly proportioned sketch with accurate labels earns more marks than an elaborate drawing with vague or missing ones.

4. Use the data in data-response questions, not just your memory

WACE Biology papers increasingly test data analysis: reading a graph, calculating a rate, or interpreting an unfamiliar experiment. These questions are answerable from the stimulus provided, even without extensive background knowledge, but many students try to answer from memory instead of the data in front of them. The safest approach is to quote the actual figures or trend from the graph or table in the answer, rather than describing the concept in general terms.

5. Build in time to check answers against the command word again

In the last few minutes of a section, it is worth rereading each answer next to its question, specifically checking whether the command word was actually answered. It is common to start an "explain" answer well and drift into pure description halfway through under time pressure. A short check at the end catches this before it costs marks.
