WACE Biology, taught by someone who has used it
Every session is mapped to the WACE Biology syllabus and its marking key — not generic biology content — so class time goes straight to what is assessed.
What we cover
Sessions follow the School Curriculum and Standards Authority course structure, so a student is never learning something that will not appear on a paper. Across Years 11 and 12 that means the four units in sequence:
- Unit 1 — Ecosystems and biodiversity. Energy flow, nutrient cycling, population dynamics, classification and sampling technique.
- Unit 2 — Cells, tissues and transport. Cell structure and function, gas exchange, transport systems in plants and animals.
- Unit 3 — Continuity of species. DNA, protein synthesis, inheritance, variation, natural selection and speciation.
- Unit 4 — Surviving in a changing environment. Homeostasis, immunity, disease, and the human impact on ecosystems.
Years 9 and 10 work on the foundations those units assume: cell biology, body systems, genetics and ecology, plus the scientific method and data handling that Year 11 takes for granted.
The marks students lose even when they know the content
A large share of lost marks in Biology are not knowledge gaps. They are command-term failures — a question asks students to evaluate and they describe; it asks them to justify and they list. We teach the marking key directly: what each command term expects, how many points a mark allocation is signalling, and how to structure an extended response so a marker can find the marks.
Practicals and data questions
Investigation design and data interpretation carry real weight in WACE Biology. Sessions cover identifying variables, writing a testable hypothesis, judging validity and reliability, and reading the graphs and tables that examiners build questions around.
